Guilty as Charged

Bad healthcare guys

Several days ago, I talked about the pedestrian bridges over major roads in Bangkok. In that entry, I mentioned why they existed – to prevent people from getting killed while trying to cross uncrossable streets – and also how they ignore common courtesy by eliminating sidewalk space and, in a particular instance, invite electrocution.

In that entry you saw the bridge, which we paid for that ties into our acute care campus. When I was at our geriatric care campus a couple of days ago, I took the photos shown above of the bridge we funded at that site. It’s pretty clear that we have been equally guilty with respect to the placement of this bridge’s stairways. In fact, it can be downright scary walking on what’s left of the sidewalk when a big bus or truck comes barrelling by. You get squeezed in between the stair and the vehicle.  The side view mirrors can actually overlap the sidewalk.

On the charge of restricting the walkway for pedestrians with our ‘pedestrian-friendly’ bridge, we plead guilty. This is particularly heinous given that we are a healthcare company. Maybe the sentence should be standing for a day in between the stair and the massively scary buses and trucks as they speed by.

  1. Yikes. This is really bad. So you put up a bridge to make the crossers safe and push the straight walkers into the traffic. Something really wrong with that…
